Welcome to the Database

The Shikoku is the rarest of the 6 aboriginal Japanese breeds. With under 300 pups registered every year it is becoming increasingly critical to collect as much data as possible about the remaining breeding stock. This data will hopefully help the guardians of the breed to make the best possible plans for breeding and preservation.

The most important part of this database is the health test results collected from breeders, clubs and databases from various countries. This database also gives you the possibility to calculate the inbreeding coefficient (COI) of a future litter, to check health-results of listed dogs or just to browse through the pedigrees.

There is still limited data available regarding genetic health issues in the breed. Some conditions that have been seen in the Shikoku are panosteitis, other joint related issues, hip dysplasia, split or abnormal heats, allergies, epilepsy, entropion, luxating patella, male infertility, pyometra, hypodontia (uncommon), and cryptorchidism (uncommon). There have also been a few individuals with a severe neural disorder (lipid storage disorder) that is as of yet undiagnosed. We are currently trying to track the following health issues in the breed: Epilepsy, LSD, Panosteitis

Due to issues with incorrect data entry due to user error or incorrect translation of pedigrees, at the moment all entries are being made by the administrators of this database. If you have any questions regarding this or other issues, feel free to contact us via the contact tab at the top of the site. Many of the pedigrees will be entered in Japanese, but individual dogs can still be identified by their NIPPO registration numbers. If you are looking for a user generated (and more user oriented) pedigree database for the Shikoku Ken, please visit www.shikoku-pedigree.com

If you would like specific pedigrees entered into the database, would like to make corrections, or need to get ahold of the administrator of the site, I can be reached at kato.the.walrus@gmail.com
